Children Unchained
Explainer
This page introduces you to the issues surrounding child labour. It explains what child labour is, where and why children work and how working can prevent them from going to school and trap them in a cycle of poverty.
What is child labour?
"Child labor" refers to the exploitation of children through any form of work that deprives them of their childhood, interferes with their ability to attend regular school, and is harmful to their physical and mental well-being. This could involve work that is mentally, physically, socially, or morally dangerous and harmful to children, or work that interferes with their schooling by depriving them of the opportunity to attend school, obliging them to leave school prematurely, or requiring them to attempt to combine school attendance with excessively long and heavy work. Child labor is a widespread issue globally, affecting millions of children, and it often perpetuates cycles of poverty and exploitation.
HOW DOES CHILD LABOUR VIOLATE CHILDREN’S RIGHTS AND DIGNITY?
Child labor violates children's rights and dignity on multiple fronts, depriving them of education, exposing them to physical and mental health risks, subjecting them to exploitation and abuse, denying them leisure and play, and perpetuating cycles of poverty. Rather than attending school and nurturing their minds, children are often coerced into hazardous work environments, where they face dangers ranging from machinery accidents to psychological stress. Exploited by unscrupulous employers, they endure unfair treatment, including long hours and abuse. Denied the joys of childhood, they are trapped in a cycle of poverty, hindering their prospects for a better future. Addressing child labor is essential to safeguarding children's well-being and ensuring their right to a dignified childhood..
WHY DO CHILDREN WORK?
Children work due to poverty, lack of access to education, cultural norms, family circumstances, exploitation, and inadequate legal protections. These factors contribute to a complex web of reasons why children are engaged in labor. To address child labor effectively, comprehensive strategies must tackle poverty, improve education access, challenge cultural norms, support families, prevent exploitation, and strengthen legal protections.
